The nature park by the Trasimeno lake

The lake lies amongst the beautiful Umbrian hills, an important area for migratory birds, as well as for fishes. The Trasimeno lake has always been a unique landscape for tourists and artists since 15th century. The delicate hydrological, as well as biological balance of the area has been a big resource for its population since the oldest times.

Inhabitants of the Trasimeno area have been able to protect their lake, despite of several problems. The lake is still a bathing place, its water is safe and high quality.

Valleys and isles of the lake still keep their original charm and beauty, like mirrors where a thousand year old history reflects into the modern time, where flavours and scents are still the original ones.

It is the widest island of the lake (69,60 ha); it belongs to the town of Castiglione del Lago and to the province of Perugia. It’s a public nature park. Until the 50’s many people still lived here, but today it is deserted. We can still admire many interesting old buildings, like the monastery S. Secondo, the church S. Giuliano, and even a small castle dating back to 14th century.

The island Polvese has been chosen as “Didactic scientific nature park”, and it’s therefore dedicated to research and scientific activities dealing with environmental issues.

Productive, as well as didactic activities on the island have been recently set to ATI - Poliservice soc. cons. arl. Anyway the province of Perugia still takes care of the whole offer, leading the Service centre, the library, the PC lab, and the environmental labs dedicated to the schools.

The scientific program includes: a lab for conservation and valorisation of biodiversities of plants; experiments on the possible ecological conversion of activities and settings; experiments for the use of new technologies in the field of sustainable development; the use of the island as an educational place (Island as a “green classroom”), proposing this use to all citizens.

At the reception (next to the Villa), during the summer, you’ll find a useful info point. Guided tours on the island are organized during the day. In this office you can also see a small photo exhibition, showing the activities on the island all year round. On the island ther are no cars.

The beach

The hotel Casa sul Lago is just 50 meters far from the beach and the pier of Torricella; here you can relax and spend some pleasing days on the beach and by the playground.

Magione

The town Magione was first mentioned in 1075; its name is connected to the Castle belonging to the Knights of Malta, who used to live here. Today the building lies inside the city centre, and it’s characterised by a square plan with rounded towers and an inner court with loggias. The present day plan is the result of a following enlargement, which incorporated a Benedictine abbey of 12th century (maybe the original seat of the Templar knights).

After a first visit to the parish church and the church Madonna delle Grazie (1209) you can walk towards the medieval villages of Montecolognola (with a wonderful view over the lake) and Monte Melino, where you can see the castle and some art works inside the parish church.
